MLB Rumors: Red Sox Could Trade For This High-Profile Slugger
The Boston Red Sox missed out on signing Juan Soto and are reportedly pivoting their options as they regroup at the MLB Winter Meetings.
ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez shared his thoughts on Boston’s pursuit of free agent right-handed batter Teoscar Hernández. However, another MLB insider has the Red Sox focusing on starting pitching or a third baseman.
“The question now is how the losing teams in the Soto sweepstakes rebound?” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote Sunday night. “The Yankees now are expected to make a serious push for free agent first baseman Christian Walker, make a run at third baseman Alex Bregman, and perhaps trade for Chicago Cubs outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger.
“The Red Sox are seeking to sign either starter Max Fried or Corbin Burnes, who’s being pursued by the San Francisco Giants. The Red Sox want at least Fried or Burnes, and could trade for Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals.”
Arenado from the Cardinals? What about Rafael Devers? He already occupies the left corner of the baseball diamond at Fenway Park. Manager Alex Cora put the notion of Devers not manning third base in Boston to rest on Monday.
Interestingly, Nightengale also noted the Toronto Blue Jays are in the hunt for slugger Anthony Santander or Hernández but made no mention of the Red Sox or Yankees pursuing the latter. Hernández has been attached to the Red Sox for some time, so it would be shocking if Boston completely shifted from the All-Star.
