Martino: ‘Increasing Optimism’ Of Sean Manaea Reunion With Mets
After signing Juan Soto, the Mets’ attention now shifts to other needs around the club, mainly pitching and the starting rotation. The rotation already saw the departure of Luis Severino to the Athletics and Jose Quintana to free agency. Another pitcher who is a free agent is Sean Manaea. Manaea emerged as the Met’s ace in 2024 in the absence of Kodai Senga due to injuries. The Mets would love to have him back, and there might be some optimism from within that they can re-sign him.
Andy Martino of SNY reported Monday at the MLB Winter Meetings that he’s sensed an “increasing optimism” on the Mets re-signing Manaea. According to Martino, at the end of the season, the Mets felt the pitching market might be too much for the team to bring back Manaea and the money he might get. Now, the Mets might be willing to “stretch a little” on the offers because of their love for Manaea. Martino added the Mets have remained in contact with Manaea and feel good about their chances.
Manaea is coming off a career year with the Mets. He went 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA in 181.2 innings pitched. He notched 184 strikeouts, a WHIP of 1.084, and a 3.0 bWAR. New York has signed Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas into their rotation. Montas, a former member of the A’s, was a teammate and friend of Manaea when they were together in Oakland. New York needs starting pitching and is still in it for the left-hander as they monitor the market.
