Tragedy as ‘baby Abbie’ snatched from hospital as a newborn by a nurse dies aged 30 after suffering with a brain tumour
A WOMAN famously snatched from hospital as a newborn has died aged 30 after suffering with a brain tumour.
Abbie Humphries, known as Baby Abbie after she was taken from her cot at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, died on Sunday.
She was taken from the hospital at just three hours old[/caption]Her husband Karl Sundgren paid tribute to his “beautiful” wife on Facebook.
He wrote: “Our beautiful Abbie peacefully passed away yesterday, surrounded by loved ones.
“She fought so hard with so much strength and grace for over 4 years and can finally rest.
“Abbie was so strong, and her infectious smile will forever remain in our hearts.”
Abbie was stolen from her cot at just three hours old in July 1994 by a woman who had posed as a nurse.
Her desperate parents Karen and Roger spent 16 days hunting for her before she was found.
Karen said: “Whoever has taken our baby, can they please give her back.”
Abbie was found after cops received a tip off former dental nurse Julie Kelley had arrived home with a baby boy.
Neighbours had known she was pregnant, but expecting a girl, and became suspicious.
Kelley pleaded guilty to abducting Abbie. She was put on probation for three years and treated for a severe personality disorder.
She had faked the pregnancy to persuade her boyfriend not to leave, it was reported at the time.
She went on to have her own family and Abbie had no idea she’d been kidnapped until she was aged 10.
Her family has been since been haunted by tragedy, with her mum Karen dying of breast cancer in 2020 before Abbie’s own diagnosis the following year.
Abbie previously said: “We have just had a terrible amount of bad luck. I usually choose to look at the positive side of everything. It makes everyone feel better.”
She was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2021 and given months to live. She survived for another four.
