I really wanted a kitchen island but not the price tag, so made my own for £300 – the results are ‘absolutely stunning’
PICTURE the scene: an immaculate kitchen, straight out of a magazine, with a mammoth island the whole household can gather around.
It’s a kitchen many of us dream of, but realistically it can cost a small fortune when you factor in the price of materials and installation.
One DIYer has shared her very own budget take on a kitchen island though – and it cost her just £300.
Taking to social media, the thrifty spender shared the results of her kitchen makeover on a budget which fans have called ‘absolutely stunning’.
Posting on the DIY On A Budget Official page, she wrote: “Really wanted an island in my kitchen but didn’t want the price tag.
“We bought 2 sets of free-standing cabinets off Amazon and joined them back to back.
“Added 2 sheets of MDF to size on top and wrapped in Fablon,” she explained of the simple hack.
The DIY whizz said the total cost was “around £300 with the paint and Fablon”.
And she shared the exact units she used, linking to the JD Greta Kitchen Base Sink Cabinet on Amazon, which currently costs £84.99 per unit.
It’s not the first time the Facebook user has taken to revamping the space herself, she explained.
“I have painted and wrapped this kitchen many times over the years so this isn’t my first rodeo but I’m absolutely made up with this.
“Love it,” she added.
Asked for some advice on how she wrapped the corners of the curved MDF top so neatly, she advised: “hottest setting on hairdryer blown in the direction of the crease is a game changer.”
Fans were quick to heap praise on the transformation, with one raving: “This is amazing! What a fab idea! Looks incredible and you’d never know! Well done you!”
The post also proved popular with people looking to do something similar themselves.
“Awesome. Looks amazing! I was going to post asking if anyone had made an island with units – I now know, thanks”, wrote one user.
The DIY hack is the perfect example of how even a relatively small kitchen can handle a substantial feature like a kitchen island – and even end up looking bigger.
“It looks like a different kitchen compared to the above black; the light colour makes your kitchen look so much bigger,” wrote one fan.
“Absolutely beautiful. Love that you did it yourself, so it’s unique to you,” said another.
While another cheekily joked, “Could you come and wrap my kitchen please?”
Elsewhere, others took the opportunity to share their own kitchen island DIYS, including one who cleverly attached wheels to the base of hers, allowing it to be moved around as needed.
“I put my island on wheels as my kitchen isn’t the biggest and I actually like the floor space at times,” they shared.
“Great thinking. Ours also moves if we want it to,” replied another DIY fan.
