Could Bears trade for 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan?
The coach on the other sideline Sunday could be a wildcard in the Bears' coaching search.
NBC's Mike Florio floated the possibility Tuesday of the Bears trying to trade for 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan to replace recently fired coach Matt Eberflus.
"I feel like [Shanahan] is on the Andy Reid path where he is never going to reach his full potential unless he goes to a new team," Florio said on 670 The Score. "And his dad's from Illinois. There's kind of an appeal to that.
"What would you give up to get Kyle Shanahan? You should at least have that conversation, because the 49ers almost traded Jim Harbaugh to the Browns 10 years ago. Harbaugh said no or else they would have done it. Who knows? If [CEO] Jed York is thinking about making a change, this might be a great opportunity."
There is no concrete indication the 49ers are even considering moving on from Shanahan, who has taken them to the Super Bowl twice, including last season.
Shanahan, the son of two-time champion coach Mike Shanahan, is in his eighth season with the 49ers. He is 69-58 with four playoff appearances, but the 49ers are struggling at 5-7 this season.
The last coach to be traded was Sean Payton last year. The Broncos sent a first- and third-round pick to the Saints for him. The Buccaneers traded for Bruce Arians in 2019, and the Chiefs traded for Herm Edwards in 2006.
