Watch: MLB Network releases trailer for new Mike Schmidt documentary
A new documentary on the life and career of the greatest Phillie of all-time is set to premiere soon.
MLB Network on Tuesday released a teaser for “MLB Network Presents: Michael Jack Schmidt.” The film, which comes out on Thursday, December 12 at 8 p.m. ET on MLB Network, features interviews with Baseball Hall of Famers Johnny Bench and George Brett along with former teammates Larry Andersen, Larry Bowa, Von Hayes, John Kruk and Garry Maddox.
“He’s regarded as the best third baseman in Major League Baseball history,” Brett said in the documentary’s trailer. “I wish I had played defense like him. I wish I had power like him.”
The film also dives into Schmidt’s complicated relationship with Philadelphia fans as well as “the personal demons he has faced and conquered throughout his life.”
Schmidt spent all 18 years of his career with the Phillies, batting .267 with 548 home runs and 1,595 RBIs. He won 10 Gold Gloves, six Silver Sluggers and three National League MVP awards. He capped off the best season of his career in 1980 with a World Series ring, the first in Phillies franchise history. He was named MVP of the Fall Classic after batting .381 and driving in the game-winning run in the Game 6 clincher against the Kansas City Royals.
The documentary should be a must-watch for those who followed Schmidt’s career as well as younger Phillies fans who weren’t around to witness Schmidt’s greatness.
