UK weather: Met Office warns of more snow to fall today – as yellow alert for fierce winds is issued
THE UK is bracing for a week of mixed weather as snow, rain, and strong winds make their make, according to the Met Office.
A yellow warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office from Tuesday 3rd December to Thursday 5th December, affecting northern and northwest Scotland.
Ice is expected to form on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, making conditions dangerous.
Rain and snow will move across Scotland later today, with snow possible on higher routes.
Temperatures will drop sharply by Tuesday evening, causing ice to form overnight into Wednesday.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Ramsdale explained: “Northerly winds are bringing chillier weather across the UK over Monday and Tuesday.
This brings the likelihood of some snow over higher ground in Scotland and northern England at times on Monday and Tuesday, as well as a widespread frost here, particularly on Monday night.”
While it will remain mostly dry and cold for much of the UK today, northern Scotland and higher ground in northern England could see some snowfall.
Elsewhere, expect crisp conditions and icy starts.
Looking ahead, the Met Office warns of more turbulent weather later this week “at this time, it looks like the unsettled conditions will continue into the weekend , with a deep low-pressure system probably crossing the UK into Saturday, bringing strong winds and rain to some areas.”
The weather is set to bring a mix of unsettled and calmer conditions in the coming weeks.
From December 7th to 16th, wet and windy weather will affect many areas over the weekend, with colder, showery, and windy conditions following.
High pressure is expected to take hold into the following week, bringing more settled weather with dry spells, overnight frosts, and morning fog in some regions.
From December 17th to 31st, high pressure is expected to dominate initially, especially in southern areas, bringing settled conditions.
Northern and northwest regions may still see occasional rain from frontal systems.
Towards the end of the month, high pressure may return, leading to drier and calmer weather, particularly in the south.
The Met Office advises the public to stay alert as weather warnings may be issued in the coming days, particularly as the weekend approaches.

Tuesday will be dry, bright and cold across England and Wales. A dry and cold start further north too, but rain will arrive into Northern Ireland and northern Scotland around lunchtime, turning to snow across the hills in Scotland.
Tonight:
Rain will move into northern England for a time this evening, before fading away. Largely dry elsewhere with just a few showers in the north and west. Cold and frosty.
Wednesday;
Cold, dry and bright for much of Wednesday. However a band of heavy rain and strong winds will move into Northern Ireland and Scotland during the afternoon.
Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Turning more unsettled in the coming days with heavy rain and strong winds at times, particularly into the weekend with gales likely. Gradually turning milder through the week.
