Malia Obama Quietly Added Another Unexpected Type of Directing to Her Resume
Ever since former US President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s eldest daughter, Malia Obama, entered the Hollywood scene, she’s been making a name for herself. She wrote and directed her debut short film called The Heart, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival’s Short Film Program in 2024. Along with that, Malia was a staff writer on the hit show Swarm; all with the stage name “Malia Ann.” While her IMDb doesn’t show anything upcoming, she did quietly add something else to her resume: a music video.
No, she didn’t release a song, but she did direct a music video for singer Michael Kiwanuka.
In case you missed it, on Nov 26, a video for Michael Kiwanuka’s single “One And Only” was released on YouTube. You can see the video below, and notice that in the credits, it’s seen that Malia was the director.
She made her music video debut for the fourth song on Kiwanuka’s new album Small Changes, and it’s getting quite a bit of buzz.
The music video shows a woman chasing her doppelganger through the woods. It’s quite a tension-packed music video, truly showing how Malia is making a name for herself for creating moody content.
Now, for those wondering why Malia omitted “Obama” from her name, her dad revealed why in an interview with The Pivot Podcast in Oct 2024.
“She’s all like, ‘You know what? I want them to watch it that first time and not in any way have that association,'” he said. “The challenge for us is letting us give them any help at all.”
