Tina Brown weighed in on Prince Charles' relationship with his sons with late wife, Princess Diana — Prince William, and Prince Harry. Brown spoke to Page Six when she promoted her new book The Palace Papers.
According to Brown, the Prince of Wales was competing with his eldest son. Both are the future king of England. However, the Duke of Cambridge is more popular.
Prince Charles has prepared all his life to be the next king after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. However, his reputation suffered due to his alleged affair with Duchess Camilla Parker Bowles while still married to Princess Diana. "There has been tension between William and Charles because the fact is Charles feels competitive with William," Brown told Page Six about the father and son.
Prince Harry's Departure Brought Prince Charles Closer To His Older Brother Prince William
Between his two sons, Brown said, Prince Charles was closer to his younger child. However, when Prince Harry decided to leave the U.K. and move to the U.S. with his wife, Meghan Markle, his absence brought his father and brother closer.
"Harry going has made them inevitably closer, which is ironic because Charles was much closer to Harry. They had a very warm relationship," Brown explained. "It’s very upsetting to Charles apparently. He’s been distraught about the fraying of the relationship. He’s been very, very sad. He’s been very hurt by Harry."
Prince Harry had said several hurtful things about his father in his previous interviews. He told Oprah Winfrey that his father stopped picking up his calls and cut them off financially after he left his home country. He also thanked his mom, Princess Diana, for the trust and money he inherited from her because it supported them when they moved to California.
The Duke of Sussex also seemingly questioned Prince Charles' parenting. He said he wanted to be a different parent to his son, Archie.
Those interviews reportedly hurt the heir apparent. It caused a gap between Prince Charles and Prince Harry but tightened the Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge's bond.
"He’s [Prince William] much closer to Charles now because essentially they’re together now trying to figure out what happens after the queen dies," Brown said about the two future kings.

However, the tipsters said that the British monarch is closest to one of Princess Anne's kids, and her favorite is not the Duke of Sussex, in contrast to what the public believes.
"She has always been close to Peter and admires the way he and his sister Zara handled themselves as grandchildren of the monarch but without royal titles," an old friend of Queen Elizabeth II told the outlet.
"Like William and Harry and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Peter and Zara were children of broken homes, but were somehow more exposed because of Anne's decision that they should not have titles," the tipster added. "I think the Queen is closest to Zara and Peter as they were her first grandchildren and have always been the favourites," royal biographer Ingrid Seward told the Sun. "She’s at her most relaxed around them; as a child she used to give Zara a smack around the legs when she was naughty, which was frequently."

Prince Harry announced in July that he was working on his memoir that would be released later this year. There were concerns that he might drop it during the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebration. However, he might allegedly consider pushing it back after his dad Prince Charles' efforts.
In a recent essay for Newsweek, the Prince of Wales mentioned both his sons Prince William and Prince Harry for their conservation effort. According to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, Prince Charles did it to repair their relationship.
"The fact that Charles has done this in Newsweek, which has a large circulation in America, I think it’s clearly a form of an olive branch in the hope that there will be a form of reconciliation," he told The Sun. "I think if you offer an olive branch it's only reasonable to expect something in return."
The expert speculated that Prince Harry could delay the release of his memoir to give the royal family favor. Fitzwilliams believed that doing so would be a fair exchange.
"I would have thought that some form of postponement of the autobiography would be considered," he explained. "Otherwise everything that is said to Meghan and Harry when they come over for the Platinum Jubilee—which I'm sure they will—could conceivably find its way into the book."
He continued, "The Royal family needs to know the pressure is being taken off them when it comes to this autobiography. This is a way of handling it."
Fitzwilliams was not the only person who thought that the move was a "peace offering" to Prince Harry. British journalist Jonathan Sacerdoti told Us Weekly it was a "shift from what the Queen did."
Queen Elizabeth seemingly snubbed Prince Harry in her previous speeches. Her Majesty acknowledged the Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge in her speech at the COP26 summit. She also didn't mention Prince Harry in her Christmas Day message.

Prince Charles penned an essay about climate change for Newsweek. In his piece, he mentioned Prince William and Prince Harry for their efforts in helping the environment.
He acknowledged Prince William's Eathshot and Prince Harry's work in Africa to address the climate change in the continent.
"As a father, I am proud that my sons have recognized this threat," Prince Charles wrote on Newsweek's Jan. 4 issue. "Most recently, my elder son, William, launched the prestigious Earthshot Prize to incentivize change and help repair our planet over the next 10 years. And my younger son, Harry, has passionately highlighted the impact of climate change, especially in relation to Africa, and committed his charity to being net zero."
The Duke of Cornwall also mentioned his late father, Prince Philip, in his essay. According to the Prince of Wales, the late Duke of Edinburgh already foresaw the damage that humans would bring to the planet 60 years ago, so he founded the World Wildlife Fund.
