Tottenham may have competition from Newcastle if they want to sign PL winger
Newcastle United are seemingly ready to challenge Tottenham in their rumoured pursuit of Antoine Semenyo, but the club may find it difficult to complete a deal for the Bournemouth star in January.
Antoine Semenyo hitting new heights
Semenyo has taken his game to a new level this season, having been one of the most improved attackers across the Premier League so far this season.
The winger has four goals and an assist in 12 league matches so far, but those numbers do not do justice to his contribution as he has ripped full-backs to shreds on a regular basis.
The 24-year-old’s displays at the Vitality Stadium have allegedly caught Tottenham’s eye, with many outlets reporting over recent months that the Lilywhites are plotting a move for the wide-man in January (GiveMeSport).
Newcastle United enter the race for Semenyo
Sky Sports Lyall Thomas has now revealed that Tottenham might not have a free run at Semenyo as they did for his former Bournemouth teammate, Dominic Solanke in the summer.
This is because Newcastle United are also reportedly fans of the Ghana international and are said to be considering a move for the player in the upcoming transfer window.
However, the journalist explains that given the Magpies’ issues with PSR, they are unlikely to sign anyone in January unless they are able to move some players on first.
Would Tottenham be able to afford Antoine Semenyo?
There is no doubt that Spurs need a right-winger who is capable of taking players on and Semenyo fits the bill perfectly, having plenty of Premier League experience under his belt.
However, the Cherries will not want to lose a key player in the middle of the season and might demand a huge fee, not too dissimilar to the one they got for Solanke in the summer.
It remains to be seen if Tottenham would be willing to break their transfer record for two windows running, with the club historically being hesitant to make big moves in January.
