New York Jets hire 33rd team to assist in hiring process
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- An organizational shift is upon us for the New York Jets. Owner Woody Johnson has hired the 33rd team which was founded by former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum in 2019, to help aid the Jets search.
So Woody is hiring a firm, that is run by a GM that he fired, to help him find the next GM and head coach of the New York Jets. Makes sense.
The 33rd team will provide data analysis, background checks, and experience to help the jets in their search. What would lead you to believe that this is going to work for the Jets? When does it ever work when Woody is at the helm for the Jets? The best answer is dumb luck.
So, Mike Tannenbaum and former GM Rick Spielman will lead the way. In 2015, the Jets hired Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf as consultants when they had openings at both GM and Head Coach. The Jets hired Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles. It did not work. Oh yeah, this is the first time that the 33rd team is helping an NFL team hire a head coach.
As I have said before, the Jets need to hire a culture changer. It should not be difficult to identify those individuals, but apparently it is. The biggest issue for the Jets. Why the Jets have failed so much in the last 25 years? Why they have not made the playoffs since 2010, remains the owner Woody Johnson? His meddling ways have made the Jets, even as an NFL franchise, less attractive.
So, they hired the 33rd team to help with the search. Fantastic. Woody Johnson, though, needs to look in the mirror and realize that he is part of the problem and it is time to get out of the way. If he does not realize that Woody Johnson and the Jets will continue to get in their own way.
Until next time New York, I'm Marc Malusis.
