Parents are warned about the terrible twos and the rebellious teen years. But no one tells us about the heartbreaking tween moments that hurt your feelings — often unintentionally! Scarlett Johansson just revealed her 10-year-old daughter Rose, who she shares with ex-husband Romain Dauriac, did one such thing to her that the Black Widow star is “really upset about.”
Johansson appeared on Tuesday’s episode of TODAY, where she revealed that Rose saw the new Wicked movie — and didn’t invite her mom. “I’m desperate to see it,” Johansson said, per PEOPLE. “My daughter saw it without me and I’m really upset about it!”
Man, that’s rough! I took my 7- and 5-year-olds to the movie musical starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and they loved it. We shared that magical experience of seeing the film on the big screen together for the first time, and now they can’t stop talking about it. So to think in just a few years that might rather go with their friends to a new movie instead of me absolutely crushes my heart!
Luckily, Johansson has a plan to make things right. She added, “I’m going to make her go again, for sure. I’m sure she’d be happy to.”
The Fly Me to the Moon star is also mom to son Cosmo, 3, who she shares with husband Colin Jost. TODAY shared a clip of the interview with Johansson, where hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager asked her about social media and kids. For Cosmo, Johansson’s not even thinking about it yet (“he’s into LEGOs!” she said with a laugh). For Rose, on the other hand …
“My daughter’s ten, so everybody is — there’s a lot of that pressure coming around now, and especially if she’s hanging out with older girls,” the mom of two said. “And I don’t know, I think social media’s hard for young people. It’s hard for me to process. I feel like technology is moving so much faster than our human egos can process. I’d rather her wait ‘till she’s an adult to be able to participate.”
Kotb and Hager said they want to wait until 8th grade to let their daughters have phones. But Johansson pointed out some downsides. “What if she wants to get in touch with you? Like, that’s the thing with my daughter ‘cause she lives in two homes and she’s like, ‘I need to get in touch with you,’” Johansson asked. For this, the hosts suggested “an old-fashioned flip phone” or an “Apple watch.”
Whatever Johansson decides, though, her husband Jost will likely support her. The Saturday Night Live star gushed about his wife’s parenting skills in an interview with The New York Times in July. “I’ve known Rose, my stepdaughter, since she was 2,” Jost told the outlet. “It’s weird. You get to actually preview someone as a mom,” he went on, referring to Johansson’s parenting skills.
“I think part of the reason I fell in love with her is she’s a great mom,” Jost added.
