Ange Postecoglou admits Spurs are changing injury prevention tactics
Ange Postecoglou admits that Spurs have implemented some changes to ensure that they do not suffer an injury crisis like the one they did this time last season.
Tottenham are without some key players
Spurs are without some important players at the moment, with Wilson Odobert and Richarlison out with long-term injuries, while their starting centre-backs, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are edging closer to recovery.
However, their situation is nowhere near as bad as it was this time last year when Postecoglou was without a significant part of his starting eleven.
Tottenham struggled to pick up results until they got many of their important players back, and that is something that the club are keen to avoid a repeat of.
Ange Postecoglou reveals Spurs injury changes
The Tottenham head coach confessed that some changes have been implemented when it comes to injury prevention so that the club can avoid a crisis like the one last year.
However, he acknowledged that given the intensity with which they train and play, injuries are unavoidable.
When asked about the differences between Tottenham‘s injury problems last year and the one they are having now, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Yeah, a fair bit has changed. We changed a fair bit in that space in terms of personnel, first of all. Then with the way we’re dealing with injury prevention and injuries. This year, the unfortunate thing is that we’re hit in the same sort of areas.
“In the attacking third we’ve had significant injuries which means you’re thin in that place and can’t overload people and some of it’s a circumstance of that, but we have addressed it in the off-season.
“The nature of the way we train and play is always going to be on the edge, it’s kind of by design which means you can have some attrition but the ones we’ve had this year for the most part like Richy and Wilson are just a consequence of the way we train and play and players just not being ready for it.”
Tottenham training continues to be intense
However, Postecoglou made it clear that the solution is not to drop the intensity of the training sessions.
The 59-year-old suggested that while such sessions might lead to some niggling injuries in the short term, the players’ bodies will acclimatise to the workload.
He added: “You can [ease off in training], but I just feel it will take away from what we’re trying to create here. I believe you get more robust as you move along the journey.
“We’ve seen that with some players really thriving, getting better performances and better physical outputs from a lot of the players in this second year with us and that gets inbuilt as you go along but there’s some attrition, yeah.”
