The first season of “Squid Game” was a global phenomenon when it debuted on Netflix in 2021. It also broke new ground at the Emmys, picking up 14 nominations including Best Drama Series and winning six of those statuettes: Best Drama Actor for Lee Jung-jae, Best Drama Guest Actress for Lee You-mi, Best Drama Directing for series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, and Creative Arts Awards for production design, stunt performance, and visual effects. Those were revolutionary victories for a series entirely in a language besides English.
Lee, Jung Ho-yeon, and the series’ stunt ensemble also won SAG Awards. Lee also won Critics Choice and Independent Spirit Awards, Oh Yeong-su took home a Golden Globe, and the show received a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series (Longform).
