Former sports association president accused of embezzling $199K
WASHINGTON, Okla. (KFOR) — The president of the Washington Association of Sports has been accused of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars meant for kids sports in a small Oklahoma town.
44-year-old Michael Gordon, the former president of the Washington All Sports Association, was arrested and charged with embezzlement on Monday morning.
"The Washington All Sports Association is a nonprofit group that helps and supports local youth sports leagues in that Washington, Oklahoma, area," said Hunter McKee with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
During his time as president from 2018 to 2023, Gordon was over the non-profit's finances and bank accounts.
OSBI Agents reviewed those bank records and determined Gordon had embezzled almost $200,000.
"When you're talking about a president, somebody who is trusted with with these funds for a nonprofit group that was dedicated to support paying and assisting youth sports groups throughout that entire town. It's extremely sad," said McKee.
According to court documents, Gordon bought a $539 bat that was mailed to his house. His son was later seen using the same bat.
He also allegedly used the organizations card to pay for gas, automotive repairs, property taxes and several other personal expenses.
"You're talking about the amount of kids that are playing in these youth groups and the parents that that are involved. It's something that they don't want to have to think about," said McKee.
Officials with OSBI said this is a case they take very seriously.
"Even though he's arrested and behind bars, it's going to be an ongoing investigation for us," said McKee.
Gordon's bond was set at $200,000.
