Three Spurs players make WhoScored Premier League Team of the Week
Tottenham Hotspur’s emphatic victory over Manchester City not only stunned fans and pundits alike but also earned three Spurs players a place in WhoScored’s prestigious Premier League Team of the Week.
A game no one saw coming
The Premier League can be full of surprises, but few expected what transpired at the Etihad Stadium over the weekend.
Spurs, who had endured an inconsistent campaign and were in 12th place before the game, arrived at Manchester City’s fortress on the back of a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town.
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s side, despite suffering an uncharacteristic four consecutive losses, were widely tipped to return to winning ways, especially with key players regaining fitness.
With City unbeaten at home in league matches for over two years, many believed Spurs faced an impossible task.
Yet, from the first whistle, Ange Postecoglou’s men displayed resilience, precision, and a level of intensity that caught their hosts off guard.
Goals from James Maddison (2), Pedro Porro, and Brennan Johnson not only secured a remarkable 4-0 triumph but also plunged Manchester City into a fifth straight defeat—a scenario few could have imagined before the game.
Three Spurs stars honoured in Premier League TOTW
Tottenham’s players were rightfully lauded for their efforts, and WhoScored’s analysis encapsulated the significance of their contributions.
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, central to Spurs’ victory, was recognised for his heroics between the sticks.
According to WhoScored, “The Premier League’s result of the weekend came at the Etihad Stadium, where Tottenham condemned Manchester City to a fifth straight defeat, and in some style too. Spurs ran out 4-0 winners in Manchester, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario making five saves on his way to a third clean sheet of the season.”
Midfield maestro James Maddison, who celebrated his birthday in style, earned the highest individual rating of the week.
Whoscored wrote: “With a WhoScored rating of 9.08, Tottenham’s James Maddison is our Premier League Player of the Week following his birthday brace in the victory over Manchester City. Maddison expertly converted from close range on both the 13th and 20th minutes to give Spurs a surprise two-goal lead before the break, while he also made two successful dribbles, two tackles and five ball recoveries.”
Club captain Heung-min Son was also pivotal to the team’s success, assisting Maddison’s second goal and showcasing his leadership on the pitch.
As WhoScored noted, “Rounding off our XI is Tottenham club captain Son Heung-min, who was on hand to provide a smart assist for James Maddison’s second goal at the Etihad Stadium. Son also made two key passes, three touches in the opposition box and four ball recoveries, to register a WhoScored rating of 7.53.”
Spurs’ team effort deserves more praise
While Maddison, Vicario, and Son earned deserved accolades, Tottenham’s triumph was a collective effort, with several players delivering standout performances.
Dejan Kulusevski’s brilliant cross for Maddison’s opener set the tone for the match, while Dominic Solanke contributed with his relentless pressing and an assist for Pedro Porro’s goal.
In defence, Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin put in commanding displays, nullifying the threat of Erling Haaland and keeping the City attack at bay.
The unsung hero of the day, however, was Vicario, who played an hour of the match despite nursing an injury, making crucial saves to preserve Spurs’ clean sheet.
As a Spurs fan, seeing the team perform at such a high level against one of Europe’s best sides is not only thrilling but also a testament to Postecoglou’s growing influence, and long may it continue.
