Tottenham could battle Liverpool for versatile Netherlands international
Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for a young defender who is making waves in Dutch football, but they might have to contend with competition from Liverpool for the player.
Tottenham looking for defensive reinforcements
It has been widely reported over recent weeks that Ange Postecoglou wants to bolster his options at the back in January.
However, there is some confusion on what sort of defender the Lilywhites are looking for, with GiveMeSport revealing last week that the club are still deciding whether to sign a left-back or a versatile centre-back who can operate in multiple roles.
It has now emerged that Ajax defender Devyne Rensch, who can operate as a centre-back or a right-back, is now in Spurs‘ sights.
Tottenham will face competition for Devyne Rensch from Liverpool
This update comes from CaughtOffside, who say that Tottenham have been impressed with the 21-year-old and are ‘hovering’ around him ahead of January.
However, the outlet reveals that Spurs may face competition from Liverpool, who are quite keen on securing Rensch’s services.
The Reds have allegedly scouted the defender in recent matches and have received positive feedback about the youngster.
It is pointed out that with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold both soon coming to the end of their contracts, Arne Slot’s men may see Rensch as the man to succeed those stars.
Would Rensch and Ajax be open to a January deal?
However, CaughOffside suggest that a deal in January may not be easy to pull off for either Tottenham or Liverpool.
This is because Rensch is thought to be ready to commit his future to Ajax and sign a new contract, thus forcing the Premier League sides to potentially wait a bit longer to get their man.
It is explained that the Netherlands international may want to continue developing at the Johan Cruyff Arena for a bit longer since he is guaranteed game time there, which he would not be at Anfield or the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
