‘The Six Triple Eight’ trailer delivers new look at Tyler Perry’s World War II drama
Netflix has delivered the best look yet at Tyler Perry’s upcoming World War II drama, “The Six Triple Eight.”
On Monday, the streaming platform debuted the film’s new trailer, which details the fact-based stroy about the Women’s Army Corps and their efforts to ensure troop morale by delivering mail.
Perry wrote, directed, and produced the film, which is based on the article “Fighting A Two-Front War” by Kevin M. Hymel published in “WWII History Magazine” by Sovereign Media. The film stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the commanding office of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color that served overseas during World War II. Additional cast members include Sam Waterston as President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Susan Sarandon as Eleanor Roosevelt, and Oprah Winfrey as Mary McLeod Bethune, the influential educator and civil rights advocate. Other cast members include Dean Morris and Ebony Obsidian.
Here is some more on the film’s themes and story, provided by Netflix: “Despite facing racism and sexism – and grueling working conditions – they were committed to serving their country with honor and distinction. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers.”
“The Six Triple Eight” is not expected to be a big awards contender, except in one key category: Best Song. Diane Warren, the honorary Oscar winner and a 15-time Oscar nominee, wrote the track “The Journey” and is a top contender to earn her 16th competitive Oscar nomination next year. H.E.R. performs the song in the film and the sequence where “The Journey” appears features choreography by Debbie Allen.
“The Six Triple Eight” starts streaming on Netflix on December 20.
