Tim Sherwood is concerned star player might not be at Spurs next season
Tim Sherwood has concerns that one of Tottenham’s key men could be snatched away next summer if he keeps performing at a high level.
Real Madrid want Tottenham man
While Pedro Porro has let his standards drop a little over the last month or so, there is no doubt that he has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent players since Ange Postecoglou arrived through the door last year.
We were served a timely reminder of that on Saturday evening, with Porro earning a clean sheet and sweeping home Tottenham’s third goal against Man City.
The 25-year-old’s displays have not only seen him break into the Spain national side but have also attracted envious glances from Real Madrid.
It has been widely reported over the last few weeks that the Tottenham man and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold are the two top names on Los Blancos’ radar ahead of next summer as they look for heir to Dani Carvajal (Relevo).
Tim Sherwood weighs in on Pedro Porro speculation
Sherwood is not surprised that the Spurs right-back is a wanted man, stating that his output going forward has been extremely impressive over the last 12 months.
The former Spurs interim boss admitted that he is concerned that Postecoglou could end up losing the former Sporting Lisbon man next summer if Madrid do come knocking.
Speaking at the launch of Ladbrokes’ Gaffer of all Accas, Sherwood said (via CaughtOffside): “There’s always a worry, though, when you’re doing a job as Ange [Postecoglou] has done, and you’re signing the right players and playing them in the correct way, automatically those players are going to attract interest from big clubs.
“Pedro Porro is somebody who I was critical of when I first saw him playing, under Antonio Conte, but he was being asked to play as a conventional right-back, and that’s not where his assets lie.
“His assets lie in going forward, picking the ball up in midfield with plenty of energy, power, and good deliveries, and there’s lots of teams out there at the moment who are looking for that kind of player… Real Madrid being one of them.
“Whether it’s going to be Trent Alexander-Arnold or Pedro Porro… maybe the fact he’s Spanish might come into things, so that is something that would concern me in the next couple of windows.”
Why Tottenham will not be sweating about Porro
Spurs are well protected as Porro will still have three years left on his contract next summer, and you can bet that Daniel Levy will quote a humungous fee to Madrid if they come knocking.
Additionally, there appear to be no signs that Trent is going to agree a new contract with Liverpool, with all signs pointing to the England international joining the La Liga giants on a free transfer at the end of the season.
