Teddy Sheringham sets big goal target for Dominic Solanke at Spurs
Teddy Sheringham has praised one of Tottenham’s newest additions, Dominic Solanke, and has revealed what the striker should be aiming for in his first season at Spurs.
Dominic Solanke bucking the trend of big-money strikers at Spurs
Over the last decade or so, many strikers who have come for a big price tag have failed to have the expected impact at Tottenham.
The likes of Roberto Soldado, Vincent Janssen and more recently, Richarlison, all came with a big reputation, but struggled to produce the goods in a Spurs shirt for different reasons.
Many worried that Solanke would be the latest flop when the Lilywhites spent a club-record fee to bring the centre-forward through the door, but instead, the Englishman has not looked fazed by the price tag, having hit the ground running at N17.
Teddy Sheringham praises Dominic Solanke
Sheringham, who knows a thing or two about leading the line for Spurs, pointed out that Postecoglou‘s system demands a lot of a number nine.
The pundit admitted that he has been impressed with Tottenham‘s record signing and suggested that the 26-year-old should be targeting 20 Premier League goals this season.
Sheringham said on Best Offshore Sportsbooks (as relayed by Football.London): “Solanke leads the line. It’s not easy to play that centre-forward role, bringing other players into play, holding the ball up and running in behind to score goals. You need to be able to do all of those things and he can do that. I think he’s done really well.
“He obviously had a great season last season and he’s been operating in the Premier League now at a very, very good level for a while. He got 19 goals at Bournemouth last season. He’s got four so far [in the league] this season for Spurs. He’s been a centre-forward. He knows how to score goals. You can tell that with the goals that he scored.
“Twenty goals will be his target again and if you get off to a good start and on a good run early, then the targets change. If you have a couple of injuries, you’re out of the team, then your targets change the other way.”
Solanke brings the best out of Tottenham’s other attackers
While most strikers are judged by goals, Solanke offers a lot to the team even when he does not score. He is in a league of his own when it comes to pressures off the ball, while his interplay outside the box is second to none.
Because of his ability to win the ball high up the pitch and bring others into play, the likes of Heung-min Son, Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski will score a lot more goals than they otherwise would have.
