Holby City star quits acting entirely as she announces retirement after ‘really tough’ time since BBC show’s axe
A HOLBY City actress has confirmed she has quit acting for good after a “really tough” time finding employment since the BBC show’s axe.
The hit medical drama was binned off by the Beeb in 2022 and for one of its stars, she has been unable to find acting success anywhere else leading to a shocking decision.
Rosie Marcel, 47, played Jac Naylor in the programme but she was killed off in the final ever episode when her character died of a brain tumour.
In a candid confession, Rosie admitted she failed to bag any other acting jobs following the axing which led her to quit showbusiness for good.
In a new interview with Metro, Rosie opened up on her struggles and also suggested that both her age and gender had played a part in her not being offered any acting work.
The former actress told the publication: “I won’t lie, it’s been a really tough three and a half years.
“I haven’t had a single job and that’s been really, really difficult. A lot of that is, I would imagine, people can’t see beyond Jac.
“I think a lot of it is because of my age, I think it’s my gender.”
Rosie went on to detail the intense amount she has been faced with over the past few years which led her to officially retire from acting forever.
Confessing losing her role on Holby City had left her with a “complete lack of money“, she also revealed how her husband’s gym had burned down and how she had found herself caught up in two very scary incidents.
Rosie added to the publication: “I decided to retire. So I actually retired in May.
“In all honesty so much changed in our lives in that time – my husband’s gym burned down, obviously I lost my job, Ben nearly died, I lost a couple of babies, I got caught in a terrible accident on the A41, another accident with a guy who’d been stabbed by his son.
“Just this crazy three years of stuff happened.
“And no money, complete lack of money. Going from a life of having really good money to having almost nothing and Ben supporting us on what he earned, which was not really enough unfortunately, because we lost one of our gyms.
“Not getting any work as well, and getting to the last two for certain things, which was lovely and everything, but the reality of going up for a Netflix job and knowing I was up against 6,000 other people really forced my hand in some ways.”
Furthermore, she even revealed how she had been rejected for reality TV roles after going up for a show earlier this year.
Rosie admitted she was left more hurt by losing out on that gig than any acting roles as the rejection was based on her as a person rather than her talent.
She said: “Back in May I’d been up for a particular job. It was a reality TV thing, I shan’t mention names.
“That’s based on you, that’s based on ‘Do we feel that you would do well doing this?’ and whatever.
“When it came back that I didn’t get it, I was like wow, that’s directly about me as a person.
“Although nothing bad was said, it was just like ‘Not this year’ and whatever, I went, ‘You know what, I don’t want to do this to myself any more. It hurts, it doesn’t make me feel good any more, I don’t know that I want to do it any more.’
“I think when something is taking more than it’s giving, it’s time to make a change.”
