While Alan has penned the novel, Cerys Matthews and her son Red Abbot-Matthews perform two Christmas carols.
But for Alan the new project often proved to be highly emotional, leaving him in floods of tears.
Appearing on BBC Breakfast to promote the book, he explained: “In that shot there [watching Cerys and her son perform the carol] I was struggling to hold it together.
“I was a bit proprietorial really.
“They were singing their carol and I was standing at the back thinking, ‘I don’t believe I had any hand in this at all’.”
Composer Debbie, who was sitting beside Alan on the red sofa, also spoke about his tears.
She said: “When he gets behind the microphone and he’s reading, he’s just professional and he just does it and he’s just so brilliant when I’m conducting the music.
“But get him in the studio and there’s tears everywhere.”
Dad-of-two Alan continued: “If it doesn’t affect you as a writer when it’s done with the music then how are you supposed to expect it with an audience.
“And if it affects me as a parent and a grandparent, it’ll affect every other mum, dad, granny and grandpa not only with just the carol but the whole Jack Frost thing about magic of it. And gosh, we need a bit of magic today this Christmas.”
