Afghanistan’s exports see $61 million growth in October 2024
The National Statistics and Information Authority of Afghanistan has published data on the country’s imports and exports for October 2024, revealing that the total export value reached $234.9 million, while imports amounted to $1,140.9 million.
The report indicates that Afghanistan’s $906 million trade deficit underscores excessive reliance on imports and a weak export capacity, highlighting economic vulnerability and dependency on foreign goods—an alarming challenge for sustainable economic development.
In a statement released on Wednesday, November 20, the authority highlighted that exports increased by $61 million compared to the previous month, showcasing some growth in trade activity.
According to the authority, Afghanistan’s total export value in September 2024 was $173.9 million. The analysis indicates a $61 million increase in exports during October.
Similarly, the total import value for September 2024 stood at $954.1 million, rising by $186.8 million in October, signaling a notable increase in the volume of imported goods.
The data further shows that the majority of exports in October were directed to India, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates, while most imports came from Iran, Pakistan, and China.
It is noteworthy that exports include both primary exports and re-exports, while imports encompass tariffed and non-tariffed goods, excluding electricity imports.
Despite the trade growth reflected in these figures, Afghanistan faces a dire humanitarian crisis exacerbated by extreme poverty, limited resources, and insufficient funding for aid organizations. The looming harsh winter threatens millions who are already struggling with food insecurity and inadequate shelter.
Restrictions on women’s education and employment have further deepened the crisis, limiting household incomes and reducing the capacity of aid organizations to operate effectively. Urgent international attention and funding are required to address these challenges and prevent a worsening humanitarian disaster.
