Man charged with assaulting firefighter after crash in Hoosick
HOOSICK, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- State police arrested a Petersburgh man after a crash in Hoosick on November 9. Nickifor Popov, 21, is facing numerous charges.
Troopers received reports of a one-car crash around 8:43 a.m. on State Route 7. The ensuing investigation determined that Popov was driving westbound when he reportedly failed to maneuver a curve and went off the roadway, resulting in a collision with several trees and a utility pole.
Members of the Hoosick Falls Fire Department responded to the scene to assist state police. When first responders tried helping Popov and a passenger out of the car, Popov allegedly became agitated and punched one of the volunteer firefighters, injuring them.
After eventually being removed from the car, Popov was airlifted to Albany Medical Centert to be treated for his injuries. The car's passenger was tended to at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
Popov surrendered himself to state police for processing on November 14. He now faces the following charges:
- Second-degree assault
- Second-degree reckless endangerment
- Second-degree obstructing governmental administration
- Obstructing firefighting operations
- Second-degree criminal nuisance
- Driving while intoxicated
- Multiple vehicle and traffic law violations
Popov was arraigned at the Hoosick Village Court before being released after posting bail.
