Woman sentenced to 14 days in jail in massive Topeka animal abuse case
TOPEKA (KSNT) - A woman accused of playing a part in a large animal cruelty operation earlier this year has been sentenced to two weeks in jail.
Court records show Desiree Therrien was sentenced Friday, Nov. 15 for her role in a large animal abuse case. She was charged with four counts of animal cruelty, after pleading no contest to the counts. She was sentenced to 14 days in jail, followed by one year of supervised probation. The courts said Therrien cannot own any animals, but can visit relatives with animals.
On Jan. 30, 2024, Topeka police and members of the Helping Hands Humane Society (HHHS) of the United States helped rescue numerous animals from a home in the 1400 block of Southwest Fillmore Street. This was after multiple reports of animal abuse were sent to authorities.
Officers with the Topeka Police Department (TPD) discovered 91 animals in the house: 73 alive and 18 dead. The animals were found living in hazardous conditions, with little to no access to food and clean water. Animals rescued from the home were taken by the Humane Society to new homes.
Charles Solomon, another person connected to this case, was sentenced Friday, Oct. 4, to one year in jail after pleading guilty to all 26 charges of animal cruelty.
