Who is Glenn Hoddle? Spurs legend’s career stats, trophy wins and managerial roles explained

His playing days may have ended a long time ago, but the legacy of Glenn Hoddle lives on for Spurs fans to this day. Here’s everything you need to know about the iconic former Tottenham man.

Having spent more than a decade with Tottenham, it’s not hard to understand why Hoddle is so revered by supporters of the club. It helps that he was such a good player, too, and winning trophies is always going to get you in the good books.

But who is Glenn Hoddle? What other clubs did he play for? And what is he up to now? We’ve got the lowdown on the Spurs legend right here.

Glenn Hoddle spent 13 years as a player at Spurs

Glenn Hoddle played for Spurs from 1974 to 1987, making 490 appearances for the club during his time in North London.

This incredible tally puts Hoddle sixth on the list of the all-time appearances for Spurs. He was a highly creative player, and also makes it onto the club’s list of recorded assists, with 40 goals set up by Hoddle.

He didn’t just like setting up chances for his teammates, though. Hoddle also bagged 93 goals for himself, making him one of the most all-round productive players in the club’s history.

Hoddle was a key player for Spurs during their glory days of the 1980s, and helped the team to two FA Cup wins and European glory with the UEFA Cup win of 1984.

Who else did Glenn Hoddle play for?

Hoddle left Spurs in 1987 to join French side Monaco. He also played for Swindon Town and Chelsea later in his career.

Technically, Hoddle was first registered with Watford, but he left the Hornets to join Tottenham before things ever got going for him at Vicarage Road.

He spent four years at Monaco, before a brief spell with Swindon. Hoddle joined Chelsea in 1993 and remained at Stamford Bridge until his retirement in 1996.

Hoddle was regarded as one of the most skilled, creative, and intelligent footballers of his generation. He won 53 caps for England, scoring eight goals for his country.

What trophies and awards did Glenn Hoddle win?

Hoddle was part of a highly successful Spurs side that won two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup, and a Charity Shield in the 1980s.

Tottenham won the FA Cup in back-to-back season in 1980/81 and 1981/82. Spurs beat Manchester United in the first of those finals, and beat QPR a year later. Hoddle scored in the original final against QPR, taking the game to a reply, and he scored the winner in that match, too.

This led to Tottenham being involved in the Charity Shield in 1981, a match that saw the Lilywhites and Aston Villa draw 2-2 and end up sharing the trophy for six months each. The following year, Spurs lost 1-0 to Liverpool in the Charity Shield final.

One of Tottenham’s biggest achievements is the UEFA Cup win of 1984, with the trophy secured after a two-leg final and a penalty shootout against Belgian side Anderlecht. Hoddle had been instrumental in getting Spurs to the final, but he missed those games through injury.

Hoddle also won the Ligue 1 title with Monaco in the 1987/88 season.

Glenn Hoddle’s managerial career

Hoddle became manager of Tottenham in April 2001, and remained in the post until September 2003, taking charge of 102 matches.

Before that, Hoddle actually operated as player-manager for Swindon and Chelsea. He helped the former win promotion, but days later made the switch to Chelsea, where he managed 149 matches for the Blues.

Hoddle was named England manager in July 1996, and led the Three Lions to the 1998 World Cup. He was dismissed from that position in controversial circumstances in February 1999.

After almost a year out of work, Hoddle took over at Southampton, before moving on to Spurs, and later Wolves. Hoddle was the first manager of the Daniel Levy-ENIC era at Tottenham.

His most recent position was as assistant manager to Harry Redknapp at QPR, a role he left in 2015.

He was sacked by England after controversial comment

Hoddle actually lost his job as England manager after making a bizarre and highly offensive comment about disabled people in the national press.

As per the BBC, Hoddle claimed disabled people suffered in this life as karmic payback for indiscretions in their former life.

Speaking after the fact, Hoddle said: “I accept I made a serious error of judgement in an interview which caused misunderstanding and pain to a number of people. This was never my intention and for this I apologise.”

Glenn Hoddle now works as a football pundit

Since retiring and leaving management behind, Hoddle has taken on various roles in the media, and is currently a regular pundit on TNT Sports.

You will also find Hoddle on ITV during major international tournaments, and he will often cover European games involving Spurs, either as a co-commentator or in the studio for pre-match and post-match discussion.

Personal information

Glenn Hoddle was born in Hayes, Hillingdon, in England, on October 27, 1957. At the time of writing, he is 67-years-old.

Hoddle has been married twice, and has three children with his first wife: two daughters and a son.

In 2018, on his birthday no less, Glenn Hoddle suffered a cardiac arrest while working at a London TV studio. Hoddle was close to death at the time, and was saved by the actions of a BT Sport employee who correctly used a defibrillator during the incident.

You can find Glenn Hoddle on Instagram where he has over 18k followers, and on Twitter/X where he has over 138k followers.
