Get to Know Tiernan Lynch
We’ve prepared you a little starter-kit with the background info on the new City boss, Tiernan Lynch.
The manager joins after guiding Larne to two Irish League titles and having freshly taken them into the league phase of the UEFA Conference League, the first side from the North to do so.
The Belfast-born Lynch, was appointed Larne manager back in 2017 when they were in the NIFL Championship after serving in the backroom team at Glentoran for over four years where they won two Irish Cups.
With Kenny Bruce’s takeover during his first campaign at Inver Park, soon followed by a statement signing of former City striker, David McDaid, Tiernan along with his assistant manager and brother Seamus were at the beginning of a major project on the North coast.
In the 18/19 season Larne finished top following a 22-game unbeaten run and earned themselves a spot back in the NIFL Premiership for the first time since relegation in 2008.
After settling into life in the top division, Lynch and Larne earned European spots two seasons in a row whilst also reaching the final of the Irish Cup.
The UEFA Europa Conference qualifying win over Danish side Aarhus was one of the biggest European wins for a Northern Irish club winning 3-2 on aggregate.
The 2022/23 season though was where everything fell into place as the journey from the bottom of the Championship culminated in the club’s first ever Premiership title after a tough race with perennial winners Linfield.
They successfully defended their crown in 2024, again seeing off the challenge of Linfield to secure a second league title.
This earned them a spot on the Champions route in UEFA qualification and the Inver men defeated Ballkani on penalties and Lincoln Red Imps to reach the league stage of the UEFA Conference League, becoming the first side from Northern Ireland to do so.
This leads us up til now, as he switches jurisdictions to take the reins at Derry City FC, let’s hope he brings similar success to the Brandywell!
Best of luck Tiernan!
