The site offers an alternative to X/Twitter, and was originally created by the platform’s former boss Jack Dorsey.
Bluesky is now an independent company, and is run by CEO Jay Graber who told CNN: “We’re excited to welcome everyone looking for a better social media experience.”
It’s popularity has increased since the 2024 presidential election, when some X users switched to the new platform.
There was a big increase in people switching from X to Bluesky due to Elon Musk being closely tied to Donald Trump‘s campaign.

How Bluesky works
On the platform users can post, reply and message one another on a vertical microblog, which is a similar format to X.
One big difference between Bluesky and other social media sites is that it offers users the chance to moderate their experience.
This is because users can select the algorithm that drives what they see, which helps create custom feeds.
Bluesky also allows users to have website addresses as their handles.
