A Chinses Citizen killed in armed attack at Tajikistan-Afghanistan border
A Chinese citizen was killed, and five others, including four Chinese nationals, were injured in a cross-border attack from Afghanistan targeting the Shamsiddin Shohin district of Tajikistan.
Radio Azadi, the Tajik service of Voice of America, reported, citing informant sources, that armed men crossing into Tajikistan from Afghanistan carried out the attack on Monday, November 18.
The motive for the incident remains unclear, and the identities of the attackers have not been confirmed. It is not yet known whether they were drug traffickers or members of an extremist group, both of which are active along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.
According to the report, the injured include four Chinese citizens and one local resident. All were admitted to a hospital in the Shamsiddin Shohin district for treatment.
Reports indicate that the Chinese nationals were working at a gold mine in the Zarafshan Gorge area of Shamsiddin Shohin. This is the first recorded attack on Chinese citizens in this unstable border region of Tajikistan.
This comes despite Taliban assurances to neighboring countries that Afghanistan would not be used for terrorist activities. Tajikistan has maintained a heightened state of alert along its border with Afghanistan since the Taliban came to power.
Tajikistan has consistently voiced concerns about terrorism threats originating from Afghanistan, urging regional neighbors to adopt a coordinated approach to address these challenges.
The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), of which Tajikistan is a member, last week supported a proposal to create a “security belt” around Afghanistan to prevent the spread of terrorism to the region.
Meanwhile, the escalation of attacks on Chinese citizens in the region, including in Pakistan’s Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, poses significant threats to ongoing mega-projects like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Targeted assaults on Chinese nationals and infrastructure have created hurdles for the multi-billion-dollar initiative, intensifying security concerns for all stakeholders.
These incidents underscore the broader instability affecting regional development projects. They highlight the need for robust security measures and enhanced regional cooperation to safeguard investments and address the root causes of violence and unrest. Failure to do so risks further complicating the geopolitical landscape and derailing economic progress in the region.
