Longtime Breaux Bridge city councilman Ernest Ledet laid to rest
BREAUX BRIDGE, La. (KLFY) -- A pillar of the Breaux Bridge community has been laid to rest.
The funeral of Ernest Ledet, a longtime city council member, took place Saturday attended by over 100 people at Saint Francis of Assisi Church.
Ledet's casket was brought to the church for the funeral service in a carriage, with his family following close behind him. After the funeral, attendees gathered at the cemetery to say their final goodbyes.
Friends and loved ones of Ledet say they will remember him for his acts of kindness and selflessness.
Scotty Borel, a councilman who served with Ledet, saidhe has nothing but admiration for the late councilman.
"When people say that you are a pillar of the community, well he was the blanket in the community," Borel said. "He did so much for the community and for the city of Breaux Bridge, it's amazing, as you can see the turnout says a lot for itself."
Borel says Ledet took him under his wing when he first became a city councilman, and provided words of encouragement every step of the way.
"It was an absolute pleasure, he was my mentor when I first got into office six years ago, we sat side by side, have gave me a lot of words of wisdom and encouragement and when I had questions I didn't have an answer to I would often call him," said Borel.
Mkyah Latiolais, Ledet's granddaughter, says she has nothing but great memories from the times she shared with him. She said Ledet filled the shoes of multiple roles throughout her life.
"He took me and raised me," Latiolais said. "I called him Grandpa, but he was everything: mom, dad, sister, cousin, brother, at any point or moment that I needed."
Latiolais said even though her grandfather is no longer here, she will always remember the principles he instilled in her to live a successful life.
"With him, it was nothing that he told me that I couldn't accomplish," she said. "His biggest thing with me was getting up and going to work, that was his biggest thing, so with him being gone, I'm just gonna push myself to be bigger as much as he wanted me to."
