'Wouldn't want to be in Matt Gaetz's position' headed into 'insane' hearings: GOP insider
During an appearance on MSNBC on Saturday afternoon, a longtime Republican party advisor said that, should he make it that far, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is headed for what will likely be "insane" confirmation hearings if he hopes to be the next attorney general after president-elect Donald Trump gave him the nod.
Speaking with host Alex Witt, Brendan Buck admitted that he is glad he is not the embattled Florida Republican facing a reportedly damaging House Ethics Committee report that could derail his political career.
Asked by host Witt, "Could they [Senate Republicans] torpedo this nomination given that outrage at him potentially leading the DOJ but then confirm other questionable picks?" Buck responded, "It certainly does provide a level of cover for some other people like [Secretary of Defense nominee] Pete Hegseth who, I think, surprised a lot of people as well."

"I wouldn't want to be in his position to say the least, " he continued. "He's obviously not coming in with a strong hand. I'm not ready to say that Republicans are going to reject him. I think you have to appreciate how many Republicans see what Donald Trump just did and would be very concerned about crossing him. We've seen reports of as many as 30 Republican senators willing to vote against him but that has all been said anonymously."
"I do think if he gets to this point this will be some of the most insane confirmation hearings we've ever seen," he predicted. "The things that the House Ethics Committee has been looking into, whether or not the report comes out, will be front and center. I don't think that Democrats on the committee will just let that go if it does not come out."
