US Olympian kicks off first East Harlem 5K to support youth programs
RANDALLS ISLAND, Manhattan (PIX11) – The morning chill didn’t stop dedicated runners who are raising funding for local youth programs in East Harlem on Saturday.
Runners gathered at the start line on Randalls Island for the first annual East Harlem 5K Walk and Run.
Union Settlement, the organizers behind the event, say it’s not only about running, it’s about bringing the community together to promote health and wellness while supporting youth programs in the area.
The organization has been in East Harlem for almost 130 years and runs 33 programs in 28 locations in the neighborhood. The race will help bring resources to communities in need, especially for the upcoming holidays.
Olympic long-distance runner Marielle Hall says the event is also about continuing the legacy of Union Settlement and giving back to the community.
“We’re excited to just continue the legacy of seniors services, afterschool programming, summer camps for kids,” said Hall. “All those things are important and all those things just make life rich.”
Organizers say they hope the event will attract more residents not just from East Harlem, but also from throughout the five boroughs.
