Sam’s winner puts Bay into cup last 16
SAM HART scored his first goal of the season to put Colwyn Bay into the hat for the last 16 of the JD Welsh Cup with a 2-1 home win over Ruthin Town.
The skipper’s match-winner came inside the first five minutes of the second half after Ruthin had equalised Craig Lindfield’s 23rd minute opener, just before half-time.
Ruthin gave Bay an early scare when they hit the post in the opening five minutes, but Jamie Cumming then hit the Ruthin bar and Gwion Dafydd, after good work by Craig Lindfield and Tommy Creamer, and Linny, put chances over the bar before Linny scored from Ethan Roberts’ left wing cross on 23 minutes.
Jamie Cumming brought a good low save out of Ruthin keeper Dan Goldston, who then made a superb save from Sam Hart’s header following a Lindfield cross.
Goldston also made a fine double save to deny Tommy Creamer and then Lindfield, before Ruthin broke away and equalised against the run of play with former Bay player Llyr Morris cutting inside and beating Rhys Williams at his near post.
Colwyn Bay, however, were back in front inside five minutes of the second half when Sam Hart’s free kick into the area was missed by Goldston as he collided with two defenders coming off his line to try and punch clear, and the ball rolled into an unguarded net.
Tommy Creamer was close to adding a third Bay goal with a lovely turn and shot, but his effort was just over the bar and he put put another shot over the bar from Will McKinley’s pass, while Jamie Cumming volleyed a good effort over the bar after good work by substitute Lloyd Marsh-Hughes.
Ruthin pressed hard for an equaliser late in the game, but apart from a couple of shots over the bar by Sam Jones they were unable to trouble Bay keeper Rhys Williams and it is Colwyn Bay who go through to the next round.
