Rookie Watch: McCain And Filipowski Are Both Ahead Of Schedule
It’s a big year so far for the rookies from Duke
This past summer, Duke players Jared McCain and Kyle Filipowski were drafted with McCain going to Philly with the 17th pick and Filipowksi falling to Utah in the second round.
Both are staking a big claim.
McCain is way ahead of the curve and is on a major heater. In his last four games, he’s racked up 27, 23, 34 and 29 points. 76er fans are brutal but they’re impressed. McCain’s personality doesn’t hurt either. He’s now seen as not just an All-Rookie candidate but, at least for now, the leader for Rookie of the Year. Talk about a splashy debut!
As for Filipowski, he’s done well too. In his last two games, he’s scored 18 and 14, and grabbed seven rebounds against Dallas and six against Phoenix. In those games, he’s also shot 13-19. That’s pushing 70 percent.
He wasn’t in the rotation early but injuries pushed him forward and he’s been up to the task.
Both players success is going to reflect well on John Scheyer’s Duke program as will the success of second-year pro Dereck Lively, who has also made a solid impression.
