APD: Suspect arrested following investigation of deadly east Austin shooting
AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person was arrested following an investigation into an east Austin homicide that happened in east Austin last week, according to the Austin Police Department.
On Nov. 7, police found a 33-year-old man with gunshot wounds near the 6400 block of the East U.S. 290 Service Road. APD previously identified the man as Shelby Wayne Cody. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
According to police, 30-year-old Lavonta Harrison was arrested in connection with the shooting. KXAN is working to find contact information for an attorney for Harrison to ask for a statement on the charge. This story will be updated if we receive a response.
During a news conference, APD detectives said Cody was outside of a building near the area when Harrison arrived in his vehicle, got out and shot at Cody.
“There was no conversation, no provocation, no conversation, and he began firing at [Cody],” APD said. “[Cody] was struck several times.”
According to APD, detectives do not believe Harrison was targeting anyone other than Cody.
On Nov. 12, the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force found Harrison and arrested him for an outstanding parole violation warrant. The following day, APD filed first-degree murder charges against Harrison for the murder of Shelby Cody.
Travis County jail records show Harrison has been charged with first-degree murder and a parole violation. His bond was set at $500,000.
