Property tax amendment on Louisiana ballot in December
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS)—Voters nationwide took to the polls for the presidential election on Tuesday; however, the election is not over for eligible voters in Louisiana.
Louisiana's general election centers around four proposed constitutional amendments. The amendments ask voters to decide how to manage state funds and whether property taxes should be eliminated "under certain circumstances."
Proposed Amendment 4 (Act 409) proposes eliminating mandatory tax sales for immovable property (land and buildings). The tax is based on the value of a transaction or property that "constitutes a lien and privilege" on the property assessed.
"Do you support an amendment to eliminate mandatory tax sales for nonpayment of property taxes and require the legislature to provide for such procedures by law, to limit the amount of penalty and interest on delinquent property taxes, and to provide for the postponement of property taxes under certain circumstances?"
If taxes are overdue, a penalty can be as much as 5%, not exceeding 1% per month on a non-compounding basis; and provide authority to the tax collector to waive penalties for 'good cause.'
However, there are a few deadlines to keep in mind:
- The registration deadline to vote through the GeauxVote Online Registration System is November 16.
- Early voting is November 22-30 (excluding Sunday, November 24, Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29) from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- The deadline to request an absentee ballot is December 3 by 4:30 p.m. (excluding military and overseas voters). Voters can request an absentee ballot online through their Voter Portal or in writing through their Registrar of Voters Office.
- On election day, December 7th, the polls are open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
What other proposed amendments on the General Election ballot?
Proposed Amendment 1 (Act 405) specifies who will ultimately control the Coastal Protection and Restoration funds.
"Do you support an amendment to allow the Supreme Court to sanction a judge upon an investigation by the Judiciary Commission, and provide that the recommended sanction shall be instituted by the Judiciary Commission or by a majority of the Supreme Court, and to provide for the appointment of five members of the judiciary commission?"
Act 405 proposes that the "disposition of revenues" be decided by the Legislature of Louisiana, two-thirds of the members of the elected house, and then by the electors of the state for their approval or rejection.
Proposed Amendment 2 (Act 406)
"Do you support an amendment to require that the legislature wait for at least forty-eight hours prior to concurring in a conference committee report or amendments to a bill appropriating money?"
Proposed Amendment 3 (Act 407)
"Do you support an amendment to allow the legislature to extend a regular session in increments of two days up to a maximum of six days if necessary to pass a bill appropriating money?"
