16 guns, several stolen, recovered after Tigard domestic disturbance
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Following a domestic violence disturbance in Tigard, authorities said they recovered 16 guns from a home, some of which were stolen.
Early Tuesday morning, Tigard police said they responded to a disturbance on Southwest Taylors Ferry Road where a man had hit a woman, chased her with a hatchet and pointed a gun at her while threatening to shoot her before she escaped to safety.
Officers at the scene said they learned that the suspect, Jason Alan Smith, 43, was a convicted felon and not legally allowed to own guns. However, they discovered a large gun safe inside the home.
After receiving a warrant, officers said they found 16 guns inside the safe including handguns, rifles and shotguns, one of which appeared to be sawed-off.
While many of the guns didn't have serial numbers, police said they confirmed that five of them were stolen during a Clackamas County burglary earlier in 2024. Two other guns are also believed to be connected to the burglary but that has not yet been confirmed.
Smith was taken into custody and faces charges including second-degree kidnapping, fourth-degree assault, felon in possession of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing and coercion.
More charges are possible related to the guns found in the home, authorities said.
