Spurs consider surprise move for jet-heeled defender
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a Brighton & Hove Albion right back who they have been linked with a move for over a number of years.
Tariq Lamptey has been linked with Spurs previously
Tariq Lamptey is the kind of defender Tottenham fans are used to seeing play for the club. As an attacking minded player, he is able to operate in the wing back role, as well as a right back and can even chip in on the left when he is needed to.
And Lamptey has rapid pace which helps him move the ball quickly up the wing, with the 24-year-old reaching 36.60km/h (22.74mph) during his first season at Brighton (Sussex Live).
Despite this, his attacking statistics in the Premier League are modest, with only one goal and eight assists in 90 appearances, which is low in comparison to current Spurs starter Pedro Porro (Premier League).
And he has struggled to break back into Brighton’s first team this season, making just one league appearance off the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Although he made use of those 10 minutes, getting an assist, while he also has a goal to his name in the Carabao Cup.
Lamptey to Tottenham speculation resurfaces
According to Football Transfers, Spurs are considering making an attempt to sign Lamptey, who Brighton may sell in January to avoid losing him for free next summer when his contract expires.
With uncertainty over Porro’s future and neither Archie Gray or Djed Spence receiving much game time, Ange Postecoglou may look to sign a new right back, but they will need to beat Everton to secure Lamptey’s signature, as they are also interested in him.
The rumour will come as a shock to some, as Lamptey was first linked with a move to Tottenham over three years ago (Sky Sports).
Lamptey would be a downgrade on Pedro Porro
It would have been exciting news if Tottenham had announced the signing of Lamptey a few years ago, but this is no longer the case.
Lamptey is definitely a downgrade on Pedro Porro and the fact he is not starting in the league for Brighton should speak volumes.
Ultimately there is a player there, but Lamptey would struggle as a first choice player at Tottenham and signing him for squad depth makes little sense when Spence and Gray are already at the club.
