Jim Gaffigan Reveals How Much Weight He's Lost While Using Mounjaro
Jim Gaffigan is opening up about his decision to start using a weight loss drug.
While promoting his new Hulu stand-up comedy special Skinny, which will be released on November 22, the 58-year-old comedian revealed how much weight he’s lost since starting Mounjaro, a prescription drug used to treat type 2 diabetes that also helps lose weight similar to Ozempic.
Keep reading to find out more…Jim revealed to People that after reaching 270lbs, he started using the medication and has since lost 50 pounds.
“I feel good,” he shared. “I’m just grateful because it’s such a better life.”
Initially, Jim admitted that he wasn’t sure if Mounjaro would work for him, explaining, “I had very low expectations because I did know someone that had tried it and they were like, ‘Oh no, I was just nauseous for a week.’ And then I thought my true joy of eating would overpower anything.”
However, once he started seeing the number on the scale go down, he was on board.
Jim also went on to say that he’s struggled with weight gain the majority of his life.
In his 20s, Jim said he “would work out twice a day just to be thin so I could eat. And then as my metabolism slowed down, it became harder and harder, and then my knees started giving out, and then fatigue set in.”
Jim continued to gain weight as he got older and then last year, a doctor asked him if he would consider trying the weight loss drug.
“She was like, ‘Well, some people are against it.’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t care, I’ll try it.’ My knees hurt and my cholesterol was kind of not great,” Jim recalled.
He then addressed the stigma surrounding weight loss drugs.
“And that’s some of why I wanted to talk about it, because I almost thought it was kind of odd that people were resistant to talking about it,” Jim said. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. There’s people walking around that obviously do not have blonde hair — yet they do. I don’t think that’s weird, either. It’s just whatever gets you through.”
As for right now, Jim isn’t trying to lose any more weight and hasn’t decided yet how long he’ll continue using Mounjaro. He said he stays active by walking around New York City, where he live with wife Jeannie and their five kids.
“I’m not exercising as much but it’s very much a walking city,” Jim shared. “And I have the Apple Watch so I make a point of closing all my rings [for step counts] every day.”
He also noted that his wife seems to appreciate his improved health.
“I mean, she’s one of these people that just genetically is thin. It’s annoying,” Jim explained. “But yeah, I think she likes [his weight loss]. It’s like living with a glutton versus living with a former glutton. It’s a healthier lifestyle.”
