ITV has revealed the fate of Sophie Rundle’s After the Flood following the gripping first series.
The 36-year-old actress received widespread acclaim for her role as Ada Thorne in Peaky Blinders.
Viewers tuned into the hit ITV series as she made her debut as PC Jo Marshall earlier this year.
After The Flood saw the constable commissioned to investigate the death of an unidentified man.
He was found dead in an underground car park after a huge flood and she needed to find out the truth behind the incident.
Now, the commercial network has given the green light for a follow-up instalment of the hit detective drama.
The six-episode second series will follow the newly promoted detective on the trail of another baffling investigation.
A body will be discovered in bizarre circumstances after tensions simmered in the town of Waterside.
This comes amid the rising threat of moorland fires and the increased risk of even more flooding.
Jo will be in a race against time to stop the killer as dark, influential forces within the town will attempt to thwart her.
She will then be required to operate in secret as she undertakes a more personal investigation in order to root out the corruption that has plagued the town for decades.
Speaking about her excitement at the upcoming series Sophie Rundle exclaimed: “I am thrilled to be returning to After the Flood for another series alongside the fantastic cast and team at Quay Street Productions.
“I can’t wait to get started and see what mystery is next in store for Jo to solve now she is officially a detective.”
The Bodyguard actress will reprise her role alongside Belgravia‘s Philip Glenister as Jack Radcliffe.
Olivier Award nominee and Bridgerton star Lorraine Ashbourne will also return as Jo’s mother, Molly.
Nicholas Gleaves previously starred in The Crown and he will once again play Sergeant Phil Mackie and Matt Stokoe will come back as Jo’s husband, Pat.
Crime dramas on ITVX
Crime drama buffs have a wide selection of choices on ITVX - here is a selection of some of the programmes available to binge.
- Professor T: Based on a Belgian TV series of the same name, former Death in Paradise lead Ben Miller plays the title character. Professor Jasper Tempest is a criminologist with OCD who helps the police solve crimes. The cast also includes Emma Naomi, Barney White and Andy Gathergood.
- The Beast Must Die: This series follows a mother’s grief for her son, who was killed in an accident. Nicholas Blake’s novel of the same name has been adapted for the programme. Stars include Cush Jumbo, Jared Harris, Billy Howle and Geraldine James.
- Red Eye: Starring Richard Armitage, Jing Lusi and Lesley Sharp star in this six-part thriller, which mostly takes place during an all-night flight between London and Beijing. With dead bodies piling up and a mystery to unravel, the heroes must work fast to get to the truth.
- The Twelve: This Australian drama originally aired as a miniseries in 2022, with the episodes dropping in the UK in February 2023. Four months later, the show was renewed for a second season. Jurassic Park star Sam Neill stars in the leading role of barrister Brett Colby.
- Manhunt: Martin Clunes stars in this drama based on true murder investigations. Series one focused on the death of Amélie Delagrange, which took place in 2004, while the second depicted the search for serial rapist Delroy Grant.
Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee are the executive producers of the hit series, who were also left gushing about the news.
They said: “We are delighted to be making another series of After The Flood following the great response to series 1 from ITV viewers.
“With the same fantastic actors and brilliant Mick Ford’s scripts, we are excited to give the audience another opportunity to revisit the characters’ stories with a whole new murder mystery at the core of series 2.”
Filming for the follow-up is set to commence in 2025, as the cast begins production in and around the Greater Manchester area, as well as locations in Derbyshire.
After The Flood will air on ITV1 and STV in Scotland, and it will be available for streaming on ITVX and Britbox abroad.
