Experts slugfest: ‘Emilia Pérez’ and Oscar predictions updates
Can “Emilia Pérez” deliver Netflix its first Best Picture Oscar? Will Zoe Saldaña be its only win? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the crime musical Oscar hopes and more.
“Emilia Pérez,” now streaming on Netflix, has been a top Oscar contender since premiering at Cannes, where writer-director Jacques Audiard won the Jury Prize and its quartet of actresses — Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selana Gomez, and Adriana Paz — shared the Best Actress award. It currently sits in fourth place in the Best Picture odds and is competitive in multiple above-the-line and below-the-line categories, so why does it feel like it could get as few as five nominations and as high as double digits?

Best Supporting Actress is one of the two categories, the other being original song, that “Emilia Pérez” is predicted to win. Saldaña has been perched in the top spot this whole season for her turn as Rita, the downtrodden lawyer who helps Emilia (Gascón) get gender-affirmation surgery. Will Saldaña join a long line of Best Supporting Actress winners for musicals? Or could that honor actually go to another star of a musical?
