Xbox boss reveals that there is ‘no red line’ when it comes to putting games on PlayStation
XBOX began porting more of its exclusive games to PS5 and Nintendo Switch earlier this year.
It began with Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, and Pentiment being ported to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation, before As Dusk Falls followed suit.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer said at the time that some of the biggest games would remain Xbox exclusives.
He likened Indiana Jones being exclusive to Xbox to Marvel’s Spider-Man being a PlayStation exclusive, but this view obviously changed.
It was later announced that Indiana Jones and The Great Circle will be ported to PS5 a few months after launch.
After the first game ports were announced, Spencer said: “I don’t think we should as an industry ever rule out a game going to any other platform.
“But for anybody to stand up and say something’s never going to happen, I think it feels like creating more certainty in a world of gaming where you really want to respond to what customers want and what our players and creators are looking for.”
Spencer has now further clarified his position, and has said that none of Xbox’s exclusive games will be off the table when it comes to ports to other consoles.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Spencer says: “I think the ball is moving in the right direction.
“I think this idea of open platforms, where users have more choice, creators have more choice, you see the momentum, right?”
“I do not see red lines in our portfolio that say ‘thou must not’.”
Spencer’s comments were particularly shocking when it came to the upcoming Halo games.
Xbox is best known as the home of Halo, and the series has never been available on other consoles.
However, Spencer said: “It’s too early to make any sort of decision on the next version of Halo.”
Xbox Inclusives
It’s a positive step in gaming when games are available on multiple consoles and more accessible to consumers.
However, those who are loyal to certain platforms are always furious when their games are ported to other consoles.
There are also concerns that Xbox will leave the console market, and only make software going forward.
