New congestion pricing for NYC plan to be unveiled by Gov. Hochul
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Governor Kathy Hochul will unveil a revised plan for congestion pricing in New York.
The new plan, to be announced on Thursday, is expected to reveal a lower toll cost than originally announced in spring. Sources tell PIX11 News that the new toll cost will be $9, down from the original $15, but is expected to phase up over time.
The change comes after Governor Hochul delayed the rollout of congestion pricing in June. At the time there were fears of hurting the area’s economy, which hadn't fully recovered from the COVID pandemic, sources told PIX11 News.
However, calls to act on a new congestion pricing plan were renewed after Donald Trump became President-elect. According to a TruthSocial post, Trump said in May that he “will TERMINATE Congestion Pricing in my FIRST WEEK back in Office.”
Toll revenue generated from the original congestion pricing plan was expected to fund $15 billion in capital improvements for the MTA. That included $12 billion in funding for the subway and bus system and $1.5 billion each for the Long Island Rail Road and the Metro-North Railroad, according to the MTA.
“Tomorrow, the Governor will announce the path forward to fund mass transit, unclog our streets and improve public health by reducing air pollution,” said Avi Small, Hochul’s press secretary.
