Tottenham man was left stranded for international duty after plane mishap
One Tottenham Hotspur player was left stranded ahead of reporting for international duty to link up with his national team squad, with the nation’s FA having to send a private jet to rescue him.
Cristian Romero’s travel plans took an unexpected turn
Tottenham’s Cristian Romero was one of six players from the Premier League called up to the Argentina squad for the World Cup qualifiers.
Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, Leicester City’s Facundo Buonanotte and Manchester United pair Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho were the other five to make the trip to the South American country.
However, it turns out that their journey was more complicated than expected, with four of them being trapped in another country after their flight was cancelled.
Romero was stuck in Brazil
This update comes from Pagina 12, who say that Romero, Fernandez, Buonanotte and both Martinezes’ travelled together via British Airlines flight BA 249 to Argentina.
The flight had a scheduled break in Rio de Janeiro, but upon its arrival in Brazil, the remainder of trip was cancelled.
The four players were subsequently stranded in Brazil, with the Albiceleste sending a private jet to rescue them from their misery. Garnacho did not have any issues as he travelled separately with Air France.
A mad rush to play on Thursday
This hindrance is not ideal for Romero and the other four players as they subsequently had to board a flight to Paraguay, with Argentina facing Gustavo Alfaro’s men away from home on Thursday evening.
Romero and his teammates will then fly back to Buenos Aires for their clash against Peru on November 20th.
The Tottenham vice-captain will have clocked up an unenviable amount of air miles by the time he returns to London following the international break.
Romero’s Tottenham form needs to improve
The defender typically performs at the very highest level when on international duty, yet has struggled with consistency in his displays for Tottenham this season.
Romero was again questionable at times during Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town on Sunday and is certainly missing the presence of the injured Micky van de Ven alongside him.
Tottenham’s next five fixtures in all competitions
- Manchester City (A), Premier League, November 23
- AS Roma (H), Europa League, November 28
- Fulham (H), Premier League, December 1
- Bournemouth (A), Premier League, December 5
- Chelsea (H), Premier League, December 8
