The Season 12 contestants boast 21 Grammy nominations, 14 Emmy nominations, and 202 film appearances. Five of them even know Taylor Swift! Play detective with panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora. Nick Cannon hosts the wild and wacky fun!
Kicking off the competition is the Royal Knight. The Masked Ambassador for this regal performer is Season 11’s Afghan Hound, Savannah Chrisley. She says, “It’s no secret that my life has been pretty rough lately, but I am here to introduce to you the toughest woman I know, Royal Knight.” The Royal Knight states, “Thanks, sis. I’ll take it from here. Chapter one: As a young girl I thought I’d have that fairytale life. So, I went on a quest for it, but it turns out mine was no fantasy. There was heartbreak and terror behind every corner and I quickly had to learn how to protect myself with layers of armor, until I became the warrior I am today. I had to break free of the idea of a ‘you and I’ and learn how to be, well, me. Now, I don’t care about castles or kings as long as I’m giving ‘main character energy.'” Chrisley closes things out by saying, “You are one of the fiercest friends that I have, and I think that tonight for your performance, you’re gonna slay.”
Visual clues for Royal Knight included a glass slipper, a red fire-breathing dragon, a TV remote, a gold megaphone that says “The T,” and a bunch of butterflies.
Royal Knight sings “You and I” by Lady Gaga. She’s got a good voice with a Southern twang, which makes me think she’s either a professional country singer or a TV star with some serious singing chops! For an additional clue, the Men in Black bring out a hoodie that says, “Ready to Sleigh” on it. Royal Knight responds, “No matter the season, I’m always ready to ‘sleigh’ the competition.” The panelists guess Royal Knight could be Ashley Tisdale (Jenny), Lily James (Rita), or Hayden Panettiere (Robin).
The second performer tonight is Sherlock Hound. His Masked Ambassador is Season 3’s Rhino, Barry Zito. Barry says, “You know what they say, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but I can tell you first-hand my friend, Sherlock Hound, begs to differ.” Sherlock responds, “My whole family was into music. My grandma taught it, and my old man played the keys. But I wanted to be outside running wild, not cooped up playing a cello. When I heard rock and roll, it unleashed a passion inside. Some might say a mystery I had to solve. From there, I was tracking that scent through campfires, dive bars, and tour buses. I was onto something, something big.” Zito closed out the intro saying, “Something huge! And we even had some of the best jam sessions ever.”
Visual clues for Sherlock Hound included a diamond record, a red guitar, and an eye patch.
Sherlock Hound sings “Under the Bridge” by Red Hot Chili Peppers. He sounds like a real rockstar! Now the question is, does he have a real music career or is Barry Zito friends with another athlete with a killer voice? For an additional clue, the Men in Black bring out a t-shirt that says “#1 HIT.” Sherlock responds, “I know what it’s like to be number one in the world.” The panelists guess Sherlock Hound could be Eddie Vedder (Rita), Gavin Rossdale (Rita), Chad Kroeger (Ken), or Brandon Boyd (Robin).
Tonight’s third contestant is Ice King. His Masked Ambassador is Season 5’s Russian Dolls, Hanson. They say, “He topped the charts globally, he sold out the largest stadiums, and was given the royal treatment like he was one of The Beatles.” Ice King adds, “Yeah, pretty cool, right? I ruled the school. But, Hollywood can be a little cold, so I ran away and went into a deep freeze that lasted for years. But now, I’ve found the courage to come back and stand in the spotlight once again. I’m here as an ice breaker, to bring the focus back to what I love most, singing! And it’s nice to be able to ease my way back into music behind this mask.” Hanson closes out the intro by saying, “We know first-hand just how good you are. After all, we did help you get your start.”
Visual clues for Ice King include a tower of speakers, a cake pop, and a passport.
Ice King sings “Tonight Tonight” by Hot Chelle Rae. He definitely sounds like a professional recording artist and seems comfortable on that stage. The Men in Black bring out a sweatshirt that says “Drop the Fire Beat.” Ice King responds, “I’ve traveled the world dropping fire beats in front of massive crowds, but tonight has been the most lit.” The panelists guess Ice King could be Diplo (Robin), Calvin Harris (Robin), Skrillex (Robin), Pete Wentz (Robin), Joe Jonas (Ken), or MrBeast (Jenny).
The fourth performer in this Group C premiere is Macaron. Her Masked Ambassador is Season 6’s Mallard, Willie Robertson. He says, “If anyone knows how life can change in an instant, it’s my friend, Macaron. She’s one tough cookie.” Macaron adds, “Growing up, my life was pretty sweet, until my life was changed forever, in an event rarer than being struck by lightning. Instead of my spirit crumbling, I dug deep. I fought hard and started from scratch. Ever since, everything else seems a little less serious. So I now act on any half-baked dream, like singing my heart out on ‘The Masked Singer.'” Robertson closed out the clue package stating, “You’re a true inspiration, Macaron.”
Visual clues for Macaron included dolphins, a photo of AnnaSophia Robb, and a clapperboard that said “The Real Macaron.”
Macaron sings “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. She doesn’t sound like a professional singer, but she’s having fun and the costume is adorable. The Men in Black bring an additional clue — a t-shirt that says “Unstoppable Blooming All Year Long” with a rose on it. She says, “I’ve overcome a lot in my life, and no matter what comes my way, I know I’m unstoppable.” The panelists guess Macaron could be Gypsy Rose Blanchard (Ken), Monica Lewinsky (Jenny), or Ariana Madix (Robin).
The final competitor of the night is Strawberry Shortcake. Her Masked Ambassador is Season 7’s Ringmaster, Hayley Orrantia. She says, “I’m so stoked to introduce my friend. It’s perfect she’s making her debut tonight, because she’s truly a festival favorite.” Strawberry Shortcake adds, “When I was young, I dreamed of going to a music festival, but one with me in the lineup. Even though I believed I was headline material, I sat on the sidelines watching everyone else have all the fun, for years! Until one day, I got the call to open one of the most iconic ones. It was the sweetest day ever. A slow burn, but the best things in life are worth the wait.” Orrantia closed the clue package stating, “You’ve been by my side through some of my biggest milestones, and now I’m so happy to be here for you. I truly believe you can take the cake.”
Visual clues for Strawberry Shortcake included stars, rainbows, a kitten, Instagram pics, and sunny sunglasses.
Strawberry Shortcake sings “Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves. She sounds like a professional singer, but I can’t tell if she’s a country singer or just sounds that way because she’s singing a country song! I’d say she’s the early frontrunner from Group C! For an additional clue, the Men in Black bring out a t-shirt that says “Break a Leg” with theater masks. Strawberry Shortcake responds, “My breakthrough role showed the world my potential.” The panelists guess she could be Reneé Rapp (Rita), Lana Del Ray (Jenny), or Rachel Zegler (Robin).
The studio audience has voted. The singer with the least amount of votes and unmasking right now is Macaron! But before she takes it off, the panelists reveal their final guesses: Ariana Madix (Robin), Gypsy Rose Blanchard (Ken), Bethany Hamilton (Rita with Jenny co-signing). At last, Macaron pulls off that mask and reveals herself as professional surfer, writer, and shark attack survivor, Bethany Hamilton! Rita was right! And that’s a wrap for the Group C premiere.
