‘Survivor 47’ Episode 9 recap: Who was voted out in ‘Nightmare Fuel’? [LIVE BLOG]

Heading into the ninth episode of “Survivor 47,” Sierra Wright had just been eliminated after a tied vote and a re-vote over Sam Phalen, her closest ally. That left 10 people still on the island — four from the original Tuku tribe, three from Gata, and three from Lavo. So who ended up having their torch snuffed on Wednesday night?

Below, read our minute-by-minute “Survivor 47” Episode 9 recap/live blog of “Nightmare Fuel” to find out what happened on Nov. 13, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. Then be sure to sound off in the comments section about your favorite castaways on CBS’s reality TV show, who annoys you the most and who you think will ultimately join the “Survivor” winners list and take home the $1 million grand prize. Jeff Probst once again hosts and produces the program.

Here are the remaining players on “Survivor 47” (click each name to be brought to their individual profiles): Andy Rueda, Rachel LaMont, Sam Phalen, Genevieve Mushaluk, Solomon “Sol” Yi, Teeny Chirichillo, Caroline Vidmar, Gabe Ortis, Kyle Ostwald, and Sue Smey.

8:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘Survivor’!” In the eighth episode, the auction returned to the game and resulted in Rachel discovering a hidden immunity idol and Sam losing his vote. At the immunity challenge, Kyle and Sue both won individual necklaces, saving them at tribal council. Tuku and Lavo decided to team up against Gata, with Sierra and Sam both being on the chopping block. At tribal council, Rachel used her shot in the dark (she was deemed “not safe”), while a shocked Sierra was sent to Ponderosa as the first member of the jury.

8:02 p.m. – Left out of the vote in the blindside again Sierra, Sam and Rachel committed to looking out for each other while realizing that they have to be cautious of appearing to stick together in the interest of changing the dynamic. Sam called the Lavo players a “group of great liars,” but Rachel admitted privately that she got the sense that something was up and so when she played her Shot in the Dark to gauge reactions, she realized she probably wasn’t the vote and so she kept her idol in her pocket. At this point, she’s willing to work with anyone willing to side with her. For his part, Andy told Sam that he felt left out as an “expendable piece” with fellow Gata players and that informed his decision to help the others vote Sierra out. He said that he spent his “social capital” he earned to make sure Sierra went home instead of Sam, hoping that it would keep Sam on his side going forward.

8:07 p.m. – When Rachel and Andy spoke, Rachel told him that it was always Sierra pushing Andy’s name out as a vote and that helped bring them together as a potential alliance moving forward. They each felt like they were on the outside at Gata at different times, but it wasn’t until now that they were aligned to actually make something happen. Andy is fully aware that he’s blindsided Rachel a couple of times already, but believes they have “game chemistry” to move forward positively. They briefly named Kyle as the ideal person to go for next, thinking they’d be able to use some Tuku members in a vote against him if he loses immunity.

8:14 p.m. – Teeny pulled Sam in for a chat to apologize for the blindside and threw the Tuku players under the bus as really pushing the move to split Sierra and Sam up, but Sam felt mostly betrayed by Lavo and so he had his sights on getting revenge there. He figured that revenge may have to come later and would play nice with Lavo for now. Once Sol was looped in, Sol appreciated that Sam was remaining cool and not getting emotional over the blindside so a new option for Lavo was to turn back on Tuku while using Sam as a number. Sol named Gabe as the player he wanted to go for next.

8:15 p.m. – Prior to going to the next challenge, the tribe received tree mail that asked them to divide into five pairs with a warning that they’d compete in twos and “better not lose.” Rachel and Caroline paired, Sam and Andy paired, Kyle and Gabe paired, Sol and Teeny paired, and Sue and Genevieve paired. In choosing, only a few of them seemed to consider that they might eventually have to compete against their pair, rather than with them.

8:19 p.m. – For the challenge itself, the pairs raced in a first stage where only three would advance. In the second stage, one pair would be eliminated. In the final stage, the final four individuals would compete for a single immunity win. In addition, the final four would receive a picnic reward to enjoy back at camp. On top of that, the four individuals eliminated as one of the first two pairs out would all lose their vote at the next tribal council with a chance to earn it back on a journey.

8:22 p.m. – The first stage of the challenge took place in the sand with players digging themselves through a tunnel and then digging up ladder steps out of pits in the sand. Gabe and Kyle were the first to finish, followed by the pairs of Teeny and Sol and Genevieve and Sue. That meant that Andy, Sam, Caroline and Rachel all lost their votes at the present point.

8:28 p.m. – The second stage had the three pairs use the puzzle steps to build a staircase and then cross a three-tiered balance beam with only two pairs advancing to win reward and compete for individual immunity. Sue and Genevieve finished the staircase first and then Sue slowly made her way across the beam with a leap. Teeny got across the beam quickly, but then Sol fell once which gave Gabe and Kyle time to catch up. Kyle quickly crossed the beam as well, evening all three teams out. In the final push, Sol got across and then Gabe crossed before Genevieve did and so Sue and Genevieve were eliminated.

8:32 p.m. – For the final stage, the four reward winners had to become the last person standing in an endurance challenge on narrow footholds. Teeny and Sol were the first to drop on the third peg, leaving Gabe and Kyle to battle for the win on the fourth and final peg. Despite having a “perfect record” in individual immunities so far, Kyle dropped and so Gabe won his first immunity. After the challenge, Jeff sent the four losers on a journey for their chance to earn their lost votes back.

8:44 p.m. – At the reward picnic, Gabe and Sol competed to see who had the best and most burps, but everyone agreed Sol was the undisputed winner. The four contemplated voting Sam out as a majority and Gabe committed Sue and Genevieve to the vote as something they’d be willing to do. Kyle wondered if Sue and Genevieve would actually be down for that, but he considered Genevieve to not be a “thinker” in the game. Meanwhile, Genevieve was telling Sue that Sol wants Gabe out while Sue was thinking Kyle should be next. Sue was down for Sol in order to protect Gabe and Genevieve was still looking for revenge on Sol flipping things back at Lavo.

8:52 p.m. – When the reward four returned to camp, Sol immediately blurts that they decided the next vote would be Sam and so it appeared that everyone was in agreement they can all work together to accomplish that. Knowing she needs to get Gabe on board, Genevieve approached him with the plan to blindside Sol using a conversation she saw between Teeny, Sol and Sam and how they put Gabe’s name out there as the next vote. She said her preference is to “take out the subtle threats” because he’s “good with everybody” and he and Teeny are working the middle between alliances. When they approached Kyle, he was down to do anything that keeps him in the game a day longer.

8:57 p.m. – For the four on the journey with lost votes, they learned they would compete against each other with three earning their votes back and one of them not. Essentially they would be building a single tower together using metal cards where the player that places the card that topples the tower would lose their vote while the other three gain theirs. In the end, Caroline knocked the tower over and so she would return to camp as the only player without a vote. Before the four of them left, Caroline was on board with the idea that they expect everyone to be up for voting Kyle out as the obvious challenge threat.

9:05 p.m. – Because Caroline lost her vote, the group planning on blindsiding Sol didn’t have the fifth vote they assumed they’d get to gain majority. Their predicament was choosing who among the others they could discuss their secret plan with. Genevieve went to Andy with a “crazy-crazy” plan to go for Sol and Andy quickly said that he was already thinking that he needs to go eventually, but preferred that they wait to use his vote for a little bit. Genevieve pointed out that Kyle and Gabe will always be on the chopping block so it’s best to get Sol out while he’s not expecting it. Genevieve also wanted to bring Rachel in on the plan and would let her decide if Sam should be brought in or not. Rachel was “genuinely torn” about ousting Sol, but she recognized it as a chance to create a bigger group of allies. Rachel didn’t tell Sam about the plan, but confirmed it when Sam guessed and asked him that he not vote for Sol in order to keep the cover. But wanting to look out for himself, Sam decided to “cause chaos” by disclosing the plan to Sol straight-away. He explained that the group is telling Sol the vote is Sam, telling Sam the vote is Kyle, but in reality they’re all voting Sol. Sam’s idea was to flip it again and go for someone on Tuku instead, thinking they could get them, Andy, Genevieve and Teeny to all take Sue out. Sam sees Sue as “the most insulated player” because of how close she is with Caroline and Gabe already.

9:10 p.m. – Shortly before tribal council, Sol went to Teeny to let her know the plan and she was shocked that she had never heard Sol’s name as an option. Teeny’s move was to speak to Genevieve at the same time Sam was approaching Andy. Teeny’s conversation informed Genevieve that her secret plan was getting blown up and so the two of them and Sol tried to flip it back to Kyle because that was the original plan and would be “easier to do.” Eventually the entire tribe was involved in the running around and it seemed that no one was clear on what was going to happen as they made their way to tribal council.

9:18 p.m. – At tribal council, Jeff was interested in how much “group camaraderie” exists among this cast of players, noticing that they all congratulate each other on wins. Genevieve explained that they’re all big fans of the game and so they’re able to see the bigger picture. Because of the chaos leading up to council, players were attempting to whisper across the group to make clear what the plan is. At one point, even Gabe told Teeny that he was voting for Kyle while Sol was trying to tell Genevieve to go for Sue. Sol was the first to get up to go to Andy and Sam to confirm Sue as the vote, but then the Tuku players were confirming Sol across their conversations.

9:25 p.m. – Once Jeff called for the vote and all agreed, the ballots were cast and then despite the chaos, no one played an advantage or an idol to protect themselves. Jeff read the votes: Sol, Sue, Sol, Sol, Sol, Sol. With all the votes against him, Sol was eliminated from the game and Teeny was in tears over the loss of her closest ally in the game. Genevieve, on the other end of the bench, was shocked that her plan actually played out.

NEXT TIME: Andy refers to himself as a “smiling assassin” and Sue is ready to get Kyle out of the game.
