Consumer tip: When to contact the Contractors State License Board
How do you resolve issues at or near the end of a home improvement project? When the issues can’t be resolved between the parties, the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) can assist you in resolving your issue. Consumers can file a complaint online at cslb.ca.gov for issues involving potential violations of the California Contractors License Law.
The CSLB will review your complaint to determine what action is appropriate. The CSLB will then notify the contractor to encourage them to attempt to resolve the issue without intervention. If the issue still can’t be resolved by the parties, the CSLB has several dispute resolution programs, including both a mediation and arbitration program. For more serious issues, the CSLB will assign an investigator to determine if there’s a violation that requires disciplinary action or referral for potential criminal prosecution, both of which could end up with restitution made to the complaining party if the violation is proven.
