Authorities detonate suspicious item at Torrance courthouse, which is closed for the day
Torrance Superior Court was closed on Wednesday morning, Nov, 13, after authorities evacuated the building because of a suspicious item.
Around 7:15 a.m., Torrance police were called in to assist the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department at the courthouse, Torrance Lt. Paul Kranke said. A suspicious package had been found, prompting the evacuation.
It was unclear whether the package contained an explosive or other dangerous materials.
Police declined to provide details.
A sheriff’s bomb squad robot approached and detonated what appeared to be an orange inflatable item attached to what may have been a cooler under a bench near the courthouse entrance. Reports from the scene indicated there was a note attached to the item.
Courthouse business was rescheduled.
No further details were made available by officials. Court officials were not available to say it the courthouse would open on Thursday, Nov. 14.
