Lafayette firefighters rescue motorists, residents from Wednesday flash floods
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Lafayette firefighters rescued several people who were trapped in their homes and vehicles because of flash floods Wednesday morning.
Lafayette is no stranger when it comes to high waters. This is why first responders want to remind people to use caution whenever they see flood waters.
Alton Trahan, with the Lafayette Fire Department, said the department received more than 20 calls Wednesday about citizens trapped in their vehicles and homes as well as others who were concerned about the quickly rising water.
Trahan said always call 911 if you are trapped in flood waters. He said first responders are trained in high-water rescues.
"First responders, be it the fire department or law enforcement, have certain training to go into, you know, flooding conditions. Plus, we have all the tools, you know, that's needed so then we can go into the high water area. And if it's too high, then we have those small little boats where we can transport someone out of the high water into higher ground," he said.
He said low-lying areas are prone to flooding like in Scott, Carancro, and even on Ambassador Caffery Parkway.
If you are driving and are unsure how deep the water may be, it is better to be safe than sorry and not drive through it.
