Water conservation notice issued in the village of Coxsackie
COXSACKIE, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The Village of Coxsackie has issued a water conservation notice for residents who use the Village of Coxsackie water system. The notice will be in place until further notice.
According to village officials, the notice was issued because of low water levels in the reservoirs and the drought-like conditions in Greene County. If residents don't conserve during this time, then a mandatory water conservation may be enforced, the village said.
"We ask that residents do their part to help ensure the water supply’s sustainability throughout the borderline drought conditions we are experiencing," the village said in a social media post.
Along with the notice, the village shared guidelines on how to save water. The guidelines include:
- No watering of plants, bushes, trees, or other subjects grown for primarily aesthetic or decorative reasons.
- No filling of swimming pools or other recreational uses.
- Avoid washing automobiles, other vehicles, or inanimate objects.
- Check faucets and pipes for leaks. Leaks waste water 24 hours a day, seven days a week and often can be repaired with an inexpensive washer.
- Check your toilets for leaks. To test for leaks, add a small amount of food coloring to the toilet tank. If, without flushing, the color begins to appear in the bowl, you have a leak that should be repaired immediately.
- Use your automatic dishwasher only for full loads.
- Use your automatic washing machine only for full loads.
- If you wash your dishes by hand, do not leave the water running for rinsing.
- Keep bottles of drinking water in the refrigerator to keep them cool instead of running tap water.
- Take shorter showers. Long showers use much more water than is needed.
- Install water-saving showerheads or flow restrictors. Area hardware or plumbing supply stores stock inexpensive water-saving showerheads or restrictors that are easy to install.
The Village of Coxsackie is not the only community conserving water. The Village of Whitehall in Washington County also distributed a conservation notice.
"Due to the unrelenting drought in the Village of Whitehall, Village officials are urging residents and businesses to conserve water," the post stated. "Due to the lack of rain, our groundwater table levels have declined. We are urging residents to cut back on longer water run time."
Any questions regarding the notices can be answered by calling the village offices. Coxsackie officials can be reached Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 518-731-2718; Whitehall officials can be reached at 518-747-7520.
